The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) issued a Guide and a Prontuario to prevent underage labor and protect adolescents working under the legal working age.

June 12 is a day to remember the importance of eradicating child labor as an element for a better and fairer Mexico.

Child labor is not a minor issue, as it constitutes a violation of the rights of children and adolescents by limiting their physical, psychological and educational development.

In the framework of the World Day Against Child Labor, the Inter-Ministerial Commission for the Prevention and Eradication of Child Labor and the Protection of Adolescent Workers in Permitted Age (CITI), which represents the STPS, issued two documents for employers and young people.

As mentioned above, the first is a Guide and a Prontuario to prevent underage labor and protect adolescents working under the permitted age, which is addressed to employers.

The second is for adolescents to know their rights.

The Guide focuses on the General Conditions of Work and refers to compliance with regulations regarding contracts, social security, and the benefits that adolescent workers between 15 and 17 years of age must enjoy.

It also includes a list of work considered hazardous and unhealthy in which the use of children and adolescents under 18 years of age is prohibited.

The requirements and obligations to be met by adolescents of legal age to work and have access to employment are addressed.

On the other hand, the Prontuario Digital, Tus Derechos Laborales: Conócelos, Ejércelos, contains the regulations on labor rights for adolescents of working age.

This document is clear, simple, accessible, with visual language that is attractive and accessible to adolescents, since, as we said, it is aimed at the population between 15 and 17 years of age.

Both documents were prepared and approved by the Working Group liaisons to execute the 2022-2024 Operating Program of the IITC Work Plan.

This is intended to raise awareness of the harm caused by child labor and the importance of combating it.

As it is a multifactorial problem, it is necessary to address the causes that give rise to it, for which the Mexican State is implementing policies to guarantee decent work for the mothers, fathers or guardians of children and adolescents and thus prevent them from having to work.

To this end, reforms were made to the Federal Labor Law (LFT) regarding subcontracting, a minimum wage recovery policy and a labor reform.

Federal institutions such as the Ministry of the Interior, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the National System for Integral Family Development (DIF), among others, are part of the IITC.

What do you think about this issue, and do you think it is necessary to reinforce this issue even more in view of Mexico's reality?

Remember that to keep up to date with the payroll world, this is the best place.
