The Holy Week vacation, which runs from April 2 to 8, has already begun, and although many are already enjoying it, others are wondering what the law says about Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

Are they mandatory, must they be paid double if those days are worked, what does the Federal Labor Law say?

The law establishes that rest is mandatory for employees on public holidays.

This means that if your company works on those dates, the Federal Labor Law (LFT) explains that you must pay the normal daily wage plus double.

But now the million dollar question: Are Holy Thursday and Good Friday classified in this way?

Precisely, the answer is no.

However, many employers choose to give their workers off on Holy Thursday and Good Friday (which this year are April 6 and 7).

But again, this is not mandatory.

For this reason, those who work during this period will be paid on a regular basis.

In case you were wondering, in April there are no holidays contemplated by the Federal Labor Law, but the next one will be on May 1, which commemorates Labor Day in Mexico.

Now, if you are wondering which days are mandatory days off, according to article 74 of the LFT, we list them below:

  • January 1.
  • The first Monday of February in commemoration of February 5.
  • The third Monday of March in commemoration of March 21.
  • May 1.
  • September 16.
  • The third Monday of November in commemoration of November 20.
  • On December 1 of every six years, when it corresponds to the transfer of the Federal Executive Power.
  • December 25.
  • The one determined by the federal and local electoral laws, in the case of ordinary elections, to carry out the Election Day.
