The STPS updated the Tables of Occupational Diseases and More

It has been 52 years since the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) last updated the Tables of Occupational Diseases in Mexico.

Ahora, no sólo se actualizaron dichas tablas de enfermedades laborales sino también la Tabla de Valuación de Incapacidades.

It is a reality that scientific and technological advances have an impact on processes, laws, regulations and everything that surrounds us on a daily basis, so it is not surprising that the legal frameworks for occupational health are also being renewed.

The good news is that with this renewal of the Tables of Occupational Diseases and Disability Evaluation , 88 ailments have been incorporated, including COVID-19.

The STPS recognizes 50 specialists in the field for helping in the task of updating the:

  • Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS)
  • Expert appraisers of the Federal Conciliation and Arbitration Board (Junta Federal de Conciliación y Arbitraje)
  • Physicians working in companies, associated with the country's occupational health medical groups.

What diseases are considered in the update of the Tables of Occupational Diseases?

Among the 88 diseases added, cancer was the disease group with the largest increase, rising from 4 to 30.

In second place we find infectious and parasitic pathologies, which increased from 21 to 41, among which the pandemic disease COVID-19 stands out, as we have already mentioned. As well as diseases of the digestive system.

Another noteworthy fact is that for the first time, psychosocial illnesses derived from work-related stress, such as anxiety and burnout, have been included. burnoutalso called "Occupational Burnout Syndrome".

Previously, occupational stress was considered by the State as a consequence of poor working environments through the NOM-035 on psychosocial risk factors, but it was not considered as a condition in the Federal Labor Law.

It also includes women's diseases such as pregnancy loss and endometriosis, to name a few. This, of course, represents a major breakthrough.

What are the changes to the Permanent Disability Rating Schedule?

As for the Permanent Disability Rating Table, the novelty is that it is now more precise, since it specifies:

  • The part, apparatus or organ of the body affected.
  • The sequel of the accident or occupational disease.
  • The percentage of disability applicable for each type of condition.

The latter concentrates new valuation mechanisms for diseases such as HIV, mental disorders, cancers of occupational origin, among other ailments.
